What can we expect and what do we wish to see from the upcoming third season of Netflix's Bridgerton series? We have a few ideas that we'd love to share.
One of the most awaited seasons of Netflix's beloved Regency romance series, Bridgerton—and, with it, one of the most anticipated character development arcs—is just a few days away. Based on what's been promoted so far, the third season centers on the friendship-turned-romance between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington, previously revealed to be [spoilers for the first season's finale!] Lady Whistledown herself.
Just as important, however—if not more important—is the blossoming of Penelope's character as she undergoes a stunning makeover and straps down on her pursuit for an eligible husband, all despite her longtime crush on Colin, one of her dearest friends. Heads will turn and gasps will be heard throughout high society at Pen's transformation, and we can be sure that Colin himself will experience no small amount of conflicting feelings toward his friend. As this season's tagline states, "even a wallflower can bloom."
So what are we excited to see between these two characters as well as from the rest of our favorites among the ton?
The emergence of "Polin"
Sparks will definitely fly between a matured Colin and a transformed Penelope, as revealed by sneak peeks at the friends' interactions, which range from warm to, shall we say, "spicy." How this friendship eventually develops into a romance, however, is something we hope proceeds with grace and patience, not something to be rushed. This would be fitting considering that Pen has pined for her friend since Bridgerton's first season, making the wait much more worthwhile.
A dashing suitor for Pen
Of course, we wouldn't mind a third party fanning the flames of Colin's envy. A trailer for the third season reveals that Penelope, following her metamorphosis, indeed catches the attention of Lord Debling, a handsome bachelor and a worthy candidate for a husband. Part of why we'd love to see Colin toss the occasional stink-eye at this new character, his inadvertent rival for Pen's affections, is simply because we want the petty satisfaction from yelling at our screens, "This is what you've been missing out on, Colin!"
Mending a friendship
The last season ended on a sour note between Penelope and her best friend, Eloise Bridgerton, when the latter discovered Pen's true identity, how long she had kept such a secret, and the role this secret played in a brief scandal that involved Eloise's family and her friendship with one Theo. Besides a romance happening between Pen and Colin, we want Eloise and Pen to eventually make amends, especially considering we were shocked to see, in the teaser trailer, a curious friendship growing between Eloise and Cressida Cowper, who has long bullied Pen since the very first season.
Wedded bliss for Kate and Anthony
On the upside, sneak peeks have also revealed Anthony, the eldest Bridgerton, and Kate Sharma-Bridgerton adjusting very well with married life, with candid yet romantic interactions at home and the couple exuding the warmth of happiness as they dance at a ball. We're so happy to see these two characters so utterly in love with each other after the events of last season, and we can't help but wonder if little Anthonies and/or Kates will be due at the end of this one . . . ?
Francesca's debut
Following her sister Eloise's introduction to society, Francesca Bridgerton, now a beautiful young woman, makes a graceful entry in the ton, much to her mother's and the Queen's approval. However, snippets from the trailer reveal Francesca to appear rather timid and, dare we say, unhappy as she goes through the motions of high society and struggles to maintain an image of poise as she dances with different partners, both literally and figuratively. Will she eventually find respite in this whirlwind of events, maybe even someone to love? We hope so.
Bridgerton's third season premieres on May 16, 2024, and is divided into two parts, with the second part airing on Netflix on June 13, 2024. We're sat down and waiting for Part 1 with bated breath, and it's certain that it'll not only delight us but also leave us wanting for Part 2 much sooner.
