Talk of the Ton: A Look Back on Bridgerton

Coming from the production powerhouse that is Shondaland, Bridgerton hit Netflix in late 2020 and changed our preconceived notions of a period drama. Bridgerton combined the romance of the Regency era with the excess of Marie Antoinette and the sheer scandal of 21st century dramas to create a show that is equal parts risque, riveting and spectacular. Before the premiere of the show's long-awaited third season, let's catch up on what's been happening in the ton.

Where Have the Duke and Duchess Gone?

The show's introductory season revolved around the story of Daphne, the eldest of the Bridgerton daughters and Simon, Duke of Hastings. Their season did a fantastic job in introducing us to the world of Bridgerton and endearing us to many of its now popular characters. At the end of their season, we see Daphne giving birth to a son Augie, who we get to properly meet in the second season.

Anthony and Kate: The Honeymoon Years

The success of the show continued on its second season, which was adapted from the second book in the series, The Viscount Who Loved Me. Here, we are introduced to Kate Sharma, who begins as Anthony's nemesis and ends up becoming his true love match. The second season matches (if not surpasses) the drama of the first, and has its fans craving for more. The season also left plenty of loose ends, such as the reveal of Lady Whistledown's true identity and the devastating rift between Eloise and Penelope. In season three, we pick up where we left off and bear witness to just how much love has grown between Viscount and Viscountess.

Queens Incoming

As a bit of a break, in 2023 fans were treated to a spinoff miniseries focusing on the love story between Queen Charlotte and King George as well as the backstories of some key characters in the show. Queen Charlotte follows the story of its namesake and the first few years of her marriage, including the struggles they faced both as a couple and alone. The show also sheds light on Lady Danbury's youth, how she came to her social standing in the ton and how she became one of the Queen's most trusted companions. The show also portrays how Violet Bridgerton begins to deal with her loss of a life partner as one by one her brood flies out of her nest.

Spotlight on Colin and Penelope

The incoming season will cover the love story of the third Bridgerton son, Colin, and the youngest of the Featheringtons, Penelope. On her third year post-debut, it seems Penelope has finally let go of some emotional baggage and is ready to fly. At the same time, Colin has come home after his travels and seems ready to settle down. After two years of overlooking his best friend, he finally starts looking at Penelope in a new light. Hopefully though, Colin proves to her that he is worth her consideration.

But What About Benedict?

Fans of the original book series, and the second Bridgerton son Benedict, were understandably upset after finding out that his story was being skipped over in favor of "Polin". According to Bridgerton showrunner Jess Brownell in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Benedict's story was delayed in order to give the writers more time to "play with" the fan favorite and give him more adventures before he settles down and meets the love of his life. However, Netflix is yet to reveal whether or not the person set to portray Benedict Bridgerton's other half has been cast.
