Struggles with AI: Writing a Book and Facing Limits

Updated: Jan 30

Creators of AI tools promised efficiency when they first made content generation possible. I tried to test it out and asked AI to help me write a book, expecting efficiency but encountering more frustration than I had anticipated. Here are only some of the challenges that I faced after using AI tools to write a manuscript.

1.   AI’s Promise and Letdowns:

Initially, AI seemed promising in generating content and suggesting plot twists. With the use of a single prompt, it was able to give me a variety of scenarios to use. However, it quickly became apparent that its efficiency didn’t match the complexities of genuine creative expression.

2.   Emotional Depth Is Missing:

AI struggled to capture the emotions needed for storytelling. While it could piece together sentences, the depth of human feelings was beyond its reach. Perhaps this is because AI generates its content from already existing work and combines them together to form an approximation that fits the prompt that you give it. On the other hand, a human writer would tap into memories, experiences, and emotions and get the writing from there.

3.   Creating Characters Feels Flat:

Crafting characters that connect with readers was tough for AI. It lacked the richness and authenticity that comes from real human experiences. Though made by humans, AI is not sentient and therefore cannot process emotions, experiences, and memories by itself.

4.   AI Stumbles with Dynamic Plots:

Writing a book involves constant changes, but AI couldn’t keep up with the evolving narrative. Its rigid approach clashed with the fluidity needed for creativity. While it could copy the flow of a written body of work, its choices can come off as clunky and nonsensical.

5.   No Real Connection with Readers:

AI couldn’t bridge the gap of human relatability and empathy. At best, AI can approximate a human voice, but its lack of cultural and linguistic understanding may cause it to use words that make sense grammatically but not semantically. The narrative lacked the personal touch that resonates with readers, one that lets them know that there is a human being behind the words being written.

The experience of trying to write a book with AI has taught me that the human touch is irreplaceable. Writing a book requires emotion, authenticity, and adaptability—qualities that AI struggles to deliver. Recognizing these limits has reinforced, for me, the importance of human creativity in the world of literature.
