Spoiler alert! We're going to get in deep with the series, so if you don't want to be spoiled, just go right ahead to Final Thoughts and come back once you've finished the series.
Once again, Kathryn Hahn shines with her brilliant portrayal of Agatha Harkness, bringing her signature blend of wit, menace, and charm to the character. She’s the very definition of two extremes in one person—she’s either wickedly cunning or deeply relatable, no in-betweens. This makes her a more nuanced character than just your regular old Marvel villain. Her performance keeps viewers invested as she juggles between trying to regain her former power and dealing with the consequences of her actions in WandaVision.
If you’re a Marvel fan, you’ll either appreciate it or hate it. It’s got a story that quite deviates away from regular MCU plots. Instead, the show leans more into Disney’s witch lore than Marvel’s superhero/supervillain formula. The show is packed with magical elements rarely seen in the MCU, aside from those involving the Scarlet Witch or Doctor Strange. Still, the ancient spells, forbidden books, and supernatural action give the series a refreshing feel, and everything just feels right at home in a witch-centric story.
That being said, the show doesn’t forget to bring out plenty of Easter eggs that not only satisfy hardcore Marvel fans but also are quite approachable for newer audiences. The visual effects are well done, immersing viewers in a world where magic feels alive and unpredictable.
Stand-Out Characters
Another one of the many things we love about Agatha All Along is the ensemble of relevant characters that contribute to the show's depth and expand its magical universe. Each one adds layers to Agatha Harkness’s story, creating intriguing dynamics within the narrative.
Rio Vidal
“You don’t have a heart.”
“Yes, I do. It’s black. And it beats for you.”
If you watched the show at the height of its popularity, then you know this was truly a viral moment to remember. Aubrey Plaza’s performance as Rio Vidal was among the top fan favorites and has quickly become a standout aspect of Agatha All Along. Known for her ability to blend comedy with darker themes, Plaza effortlessly portrays Rio’s sharp wit and underlying vulnerability. Her comedic timing is also spectacular, adding a refreshing twist to intense moments and making Rio both relatable and intriguing.
William Kaplan/Billy Maximoff
Remember Charlie Spring—that cute guy we all had a crush on from the show Heartstopper? Yep, he’s here, and he’s making his mark as (major spoiler alert) William Kaplan, a reincarnation of one of Wanda’s twins, Billy Maximoff. Joe Locke’s portrayal of William/Billy in Agatha All Along marks an exciting expansion of his character from the Marvel Comics universe.
His performance captures the tension between admiration and wariness as he develops a love–hate relationship with Agatha, with whom he seems to have been beefing ever since he was a child. His magical abilities also definitely resonate with the series’ central themes of witchcraft and family dynamics, making him a beloved character among fans of the show.
Witches from Agatha’s Coven
“Potions,” “Divination,” and “Defense Against the Dark Arts” may not be an entirely new concept to you, but in Agatha All Along, we explore all these elements in an entirely new and refreshing light—this time, outside of any school of witchcraft and wizardry.
Jennifer (Sasheer Zamata), Lilia (Patti LuPone), and Alice (Ali Ahn)—each specializing in potions, divination, and defense magic, respectively—enrich the show’s narrative by deepening the witching community surrounding Agatha. Together, these characters explore themes of loyalty, rivalry, and the complexities of female relationships within a magical context, filling the storyline with their distinct perspectives on power and identity.
Final Thoughts
For many viewers, what makes Agatha All Along stand out is its ability to balance darker, magical themes with humor and heart. It delves into Agatha’s motivations, her moral complexities, and her relationships with other magical beings.
The show’s tone is definitely reminiscent of WandaVision’s blend of drama and sitcom-style fun but with more focus on the supernatural. With its rich magical lore, sharp humor, and a lead performance that carries the show, it’s a must-watch for Marvel fans and anyone looking for a spellbinding adventure.
